if you are active (reading and typing) in the room you do not really need beep.

I agree that if you are idle, beep would be nice to alert you about new user joining the room. This will be available in new BlastChat implementation. Contact me over email when you have time and we can take a look at it.

do all versions of blastchat (what i mean is, even the not-free ones) require every FF to install the special plugin?

coz the "beep", is an integral part of the chat as far as I'm concerned... it's what lets you know when a message has arrived, so that you can respond promptly, making for a very interactive live chat.

without the beep, it's nothing more than just a shoutout box.

and it's hard to require every chatter there to install the special firefox plugin just so that they may be able to hear the beep sound there.

plus, not all of them know that they even need to install something so that the whole feature of the chatroom may be used, let alone trying to find what to download.

just my 2 cents

look:
1. we could go with flash implementation = every computer MUST download flash plug-in to play flash movies/sound

2. we could go with our current implementation = every FF needs to download special plugin because it is not there by default

So in both scenarios something must be downloaded to every computer for it to work.

We went with option 2, but new blastchat implementation will have option 1 because flash plug-in is much simpler to install and works.

so if it is to be downloaded to my computer (and i'm not using my own computer when i go on the net, it's either i'm at a friend's house, an associate's place, or usually in an internet cafe) i will always have to download it everytime i go in the site and if their mozilla firefox doesn't have that plug in?

hope there's a better solution for this. coz it's not only my computer (the computers that i use anyway) that does not hear the beep sound, it's also the computers of the chatters that I chat with. so even if i download that plug in to my own computer (assuming that i buy my own computer and have fast internet access that time), it's not efficient in the sense that it's only me who can hear the beep sound, but the other chatters won't be able to use that feature.

You download it to your computer, as your computer should play the sounds, not the webserver

We are not planning to adjust sound code in this version of the chat, new implementation that is being work at has different sound implementation and works in all tested browsers.

If beep does not work for you in FireFox, and you did install Quicktime but it still does not work, please try to install wmpfirefoxplugin

does this download refer to your computer? or you download this plugin to your website?
